Hey, kids! Chef Maria Hines of Tilth, Wallingford's very own Iron Chef and 2010 James Beard Award winner, graces us with another delicious cooking demonstration today at 4 p.m. at your Wallingford Farmers Market! And here's another cool thing: your Wallingford Farmers Market now has a sister market in Oxfordshire, England -- the Wallingford Local Producers Market. In the future, we will look to enjoy some cultural exchanges with them. Pretty cool, huh? And if you find another Wallingford market out there somewhere, please let us know!
Okay, it's gonna be short and sweet today, because my brain is on strike. But let's talk about some wonderful crops coming into season right now -- stuff you should load up on now for the cold, dark, wet months. Like this kabocha winter squash from Alvarez. This is amazing winter squash, and it will keep for months, if you don't eat it first, that is!
And finally... shelling beans!!! These are cranberry beans from Alm Hill Gardens. They are just the first of a wave of shelling beans we can expect to see in the coming weeks. Enjoy them now fresh, or shell and freeze them for winter.
And I said short and sweet, didn't I? Well, I finish today with this lovely rapini from Full Circle Farm. Normally thought of as a spring crop, this year's weather has made it a late summer crop, too! This leafy cousin of broccoli is just plain delicious. Enjoy!
Of course, this is just a highlighting of what you will find today for your weekend festivities, and for the rest of the week. There is still plenty of other stuff just waiting for you at your Wallingford Farmers Market this week.
