Wednesday, June 2nd: Basil, Biscotti, Sugar Snap Peas, Pork, Napa Cabbage & Eggs!

Okay, so Spring hasn't treated us all that well at your Wallingford Farmers Market. But you still need to eat, right? Do you really wanna skip the Market for a little (okay, a lot) of rain and suffer another week's worth of corporate groceries from the Big Box Store? Let's face it. You are not going to find eggs like these from Stoney Plains across the street. They're like sunshine in a shell. And actually, the sun is trying to peak out right now anyway, so come on down!

How about some sugar snap peas -- the first of the season -- from Alvarez Organic Farms. Chef Amy McCray from Eva Restaurant, in Tangletown, used some of these in her cooking demo last week. They are sweet, crunchy and delicious!

How about some fresh Biscotti di Prato from Pasteria Lucchese? These may be the best biscotti I've ever had. The love and care these folks put into developing each of their recipes is, well, Italian, and we all know how much love Italians have to give. (Okay, I don't even know what I'm talking about here, but trust me, these biscotti are great!)

Alm Hill Gardens grows a different variety of asparagus than Alvarez does. They look different, and they taste different. If you love asparagus, and you haven't tried some from both farms, you really should.

You know Olsen Farms for their amazing potatoes. You may even know them for their grass-fed beef. But did you know they also raise pigs? Yup. And they are now bringing delicious, pasture-raised pork products from those pigs direct to you at your Wallingford Farmers Market.

Billy's has the first fresh basil of the season for you, right out of their greenhouses. Been dying for some fresh, local basil, woe these many months? Stop by and pick some up today!

The shear artistry of the flower arrangements created by The Old Farmer never cease to amaze me. I worry sometimes that I have come to take their talent, and their spectacular bouquets, for granted. So I thought I would take a minute to remind myself, and you,  that I lack the skills to grow such magnificent flowers, let alone put them together like this, and at such a reasonable price, too!

Just think of all the wonderful dishes you can make from theis gorgeous napa cabbage from Summer Run. Maybe some kimchi? A nice stir-fry with some tofu? Some slaw? The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. Grab a head of it today, and have some fun!

There is still plenty of other stuff just waiting for you at your Wallingford Farmers Market this week. For a full accounting of what you will find, click on “What’s Fresh Now!” in the upper right-hand corner.
